Through the Monitor: Unplugged

A musical evening hosted by yours truly

This Saturday, May 18th, in a cozy, blanketed basement nestled in Ridgewood, that regularly hosts rehearsals and writing sessions, a new event will inaugurate the space.

Wrong Choice Records is presenting Through The Monitor: Unplugged, the first-ever event in The Fort. It will feature stripped down performances from New York bands Looms and Antilock, as well as musicians Aaron Gonzalez, Sean Barna, and Mitch Meyer.

Looms, operational in the city for almost a decade, often ensnares listeners with their soft indie-folk sound. Their introspective tracks are full of softness and doubt, often inviting feelings of nostalgia, though the listener does not always know quite what for.

After touring with and fronting Texas-based post-hardcore/pop-punk emo band Lost at Sea for nearly a decade, Aaron Gonzalez delivers his first show in two years, swapping out the electric guitar for a more delicate approach to songs old and new.

Antilock takes the listener on a journey with them. Their punk sound is infused with softness, pulling the listener in. The music is regularly energetic, while the lyrics — often tinged with melancholy — signal a bitter edge to the intensity of the tracks. The two main band members are close friends, and the easy melding of their sounds denotes the strength of their bond.

Certainly no stranger to the stage, after years of writing and playing in the Brooklyn band scene with various groups and individuals (Zoos, Drive-In and Climates to name a few…), Mitch Meyer  is debuting his first songwriter project in 2024. Mitch grew up in the Chicago area on a healthy diet of folk, songwriter, metal and emo.

Without a doubt, Sean Barna will offer an experience thick with powerful emotions, painting a deeply personal picture of the New York queer art scene as he experiences it through his lyrics. His past work has taken listeners through an area of Greenwich Village, encouraging them to see it as he does. A haunting sense of doom permeates much of his music, offering listeners a look into his mind for a moment.

We invite you to Ridgewood, to spend an evening with us in this makeshift bunker, filled only with the sounds of these skilled musicians and, hopefully, your applause.
